I’m not a biker. Friends who are bikers have learned not to trust me with their most prized possession. Recently, a friend coaxed me onto his new bike, telling me that I just had to ride it, that it would absolutely change my perspective on biking. I accidentally crashed his new motorcycle. We don’t talk much these days.

The only bikes I want see these days are in the movies. While the rest of American enjoys the open road, I’m content getting the faux experience from DVDs of Easy Rider, Terminator 2, or even Lords of Flatbush. While I don’t know motorcycles, I do know financing. Having spent several years as a credit analyst for a bank, I’ve seen more red flags and application mistakes than one can imagine.

Ever wonder why a bike loan seems harder to get than a mortgage or boat loan? The answer is simple. Homes don’t go anywhere (unless we’re talking about a mobile home, of course). You can’t hide a boat. They’re too big. Motorcycles are easy to hide and a headache to try to repossess.

“You want life to mean something, and be real and stuff. But then you just get old… and get a job.”

As a result, filling out a loan application for motorcycle financing should be approached similar to a job interview. Ask lots of questions because this decision will influence your daily life for years to come. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you apply for financing of that band new bike you’ve had your eye on: Have a nice cash down-payment ready, if possible.

The amount a lender will give you is dependent upon an equity number unique to different lenders and finance programs. In some cases, the more equity in the bike you need to borrow, the higher the interest rate. A nice down-payment says you’ve got some skin in the game. You’re prepared. It also helps prevent you from borrowing more than you can afford or need….and paying interest on that extra amount.

If you have a business relationship with a bank, apply there rather than through a dealership.

Dealers tend to offer a myriad of financing programs, some through manufacturers. These tend to be high interest or variable rate loans. The salesmen gets paid a percentage for placing the loan, so he’ll place it with whomever offers him the best compensation. Often he is not acting in your best interest. The only advantage of financing through a dealer is that they have every incentive to move the vehicle so, if your credit is less than stellar, they will make an effort to finance your bike regardless. You will very likely pay a much higher interest rate, however.

Stop in at the bank or credit union where you have your checking account. The changes are you’ll get terms more to your liking.

Have your documents with you at time of application.

Approvals are often conditional upon receipt of verifying documents. Salesmen are infamous for telling folks what they want to hear only to renege once they have pay stubs or other means of verification. Have a recent pay stub and previous year’s tax return with you when you apply. Have him review it in your presence. Don’t give the salesmen an excuse for backing you into less desirable financing terms.

Avoid finance companies if at all possible.

The HFCs and Beneficial of the world offer immediate service and quick approval times. They also straddle the fence when it comes to ethics. Each state has what is called a “usury rate”, the highest rate allowable by law. Finance companies often charge the highest rate acceptable by law and in turn, extend the term of the loan out a few more years than is necessary. The borrower sees a low monthly payment and takes the bate, not realizing that the loan extends out longer than necessary, making the total finance charge outrageous…and very profitable for the finance company.

That goes for the lender and the borrower. A good finance manager will look out for his customers and make sure the buyer gets the financing he needs. But let’s face it, it’s buyer beware. The onus is on you, the borrower, to research rates, terms, and ask the right questions. Like a job interview, if you come prepared with your “resume” (pay stubs, 1040′s, etc) and know your subject, you’ll be fine. And when all is said and done, you’ll be riding out of the dealership saying…

Just Keep Looking at The Road Please!

• The Cat and Fiddle Route.  This eleven kilometre route is considered a must for bikers and runs from Buxton to Macclesfield traversing the Peak District.  The good news is the run is named after a pub but the bad news is that the road is considered one of the most dangerous in Britain.  There’s now a 50mph speed limit in place which has helped reduce the number of accidents.  This run will teach you all you need to know about cornering, as the bends get tighter as you progress.  The favoured transit is from the Macclesfield side, ending at the obligatory and welcoming pub. 
• Hardknott Pass, further north, in the Lake District is challenging on so many levels.  The route follows a Roman Road to the fort at the top.  Being one of the steepest roads in the UK the Romans were presumably forced to depart from their traditional A to B approach to road building.  The modern single track lane is narrow, steep, winding and full of hazards in the form of other road users and/or tourists.  This is not a challenge for the newbie, but one to approach with some experience behind you.  The summit at 1200 feet offers rewarding mountainous views, a chance to get your breath back and recover your nerves. 
• If the impressive mountain scenery of the Lake District has grabbed your heart a trip further north still to the Scottish mountains will be on the cards.  One route that deserves some attention is the A82 from Glasgow all the way up to Inverness.  This is the road movie option and it’s worth packing a camera.  Along the way are numerous watering holes and B&B’s allowing you to experience the best of Scottish scenery at leisure.  Passing Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Loch Ness, you get to experience the best of the diverse Scottish backdrop on a road considered by many to be built for the biker.
